Plot summary

South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission holds hearings in 1995 and 1996, and Anna Malan, an Afrikaner poet, covers them as a broadcaster. Her husband supports her, while her reporting causes friction with her parents and her younger brother Boetie, uneasy about Black majority rule. In Cape Town, Anna meets her colleague Dumi Mkhalipi, a sound engineer, and Langston Whitfield, an American reporter on assignment for The Washington Post who wants to interview Colonel De Jager, an officer accused of human rights violations. Whitfield is hostile toward White South Africans, Afrikaners in particular. The three travel the country reporting on hearings where victims testify about their suffering and perpetrators confess in the hope of amnesty, hearings that rest on restorative justice and on Ubuntu, the idea that a universal bond joins all humanity, which Whitfield questions.
