Plot summary

Hélène Berthier, a widow who no longer uses her married name of Marly, has spent her life keeping the legacy of her uncle Paul Berthier, a noted artist. On a summer day at her country house, her three children and their families gather for her seventy-fifth birthday, and she wants them to settle amicably the question of the house and the valuable things in it. She dies shortly after. Frédéric, the eldest, remains in Paris and would rather hold on to the house as a place where the family can still gather. Adrienne lives in New York with an American man, and Jérémie and his wife live in China; both want only a few mementos and the rest turned into cash.
