Plot summary
Four men who helped investigate a German millionaire at the close of World War II are found murdered. A tiny doll lies beside each corpse. Inspector Holloway takes the case. He finds that the killer uses a different method each time, but always leaves a realistically carved doll that resembles the victim. The Inspector visits an old-fashioned salon where three musicians of a string quartet wait for their colleague. The trail leads Holloway to Mrs. Ilsa Von Sturm, a disabled German woman who keeps dark secrets that may solve the murders.
