Plot summary
In 1930 New York, the society wives Mrs. Erlynne has betrayed shut her out, and the fashionable men who once admired her no longer welcome her either. She sells her jewelry and buys a crossing to Amalfi, on the Italian coast, where the wealthy gather for the season, and turns her attention to Robert Windermere, a newly married man. His car is often parked at her villa, and the town's gossips decide the two are lovers. Robert's young wife Meg, unaware of the talk, brushes off the attentions of Lord Darlington, an English nobleman and international playboy. Lord Augustus, a twice-divorced older peer called Tuppy, proposes marriage to Mrs. Erlynne.
