Robert Hardy
Biography
Robert Hardy was an English actor whose career spanned theater, film, and television. Born in Cheltenham in 1925, he was educated at Oxford and began as a classical actor, appearing at Stratford-upon-Avon in Shakespeare plays such as All's Well That Ends Well and Coriolanus. He later became widely recognized for playing Siegfried Farnon in the long-running series All Creatures Great and Small, a role that earned him a BAFTA nomination in 1980. He was also nominated for playing Winston Churchill in Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years. His film work included Torpedo Run (1958), Sense and Sensibility (1995), and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994), and he played Cornelius Fudge in the Harry Potter films. An expert on the medieval English longbow, he wrote two books on the subject. He received a CBE in 1981 and died in 2017.

A change of course
Hardy served in the Royal Air Force during World War II, and his studies were interrupted by that service. He trained as a pilot, with some of his instruction taking place in Terrell, Texas, through the British Flying Training School Program.
Early training
After serving in the RAF, Hardy returned to earn a BA (Hons) in English. He treasured his time studying under C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, though he called the degree he obtained "shabby".
