Plot summary
Kristie St. Clair marries Marc St. Clair, a television personality, and on their wedding night he leads her to a dark and windy outcrop of rock. She grows faint, and a man whose chest is covered in scars makes love to her. She conceives and gives birth to a son, Dylan, and the family lives on the Isle of Man. Dylan impales his pet guinea pig on a stake. Elizabeth Plummer, an old family friend, works to take Kristie's place and keep her from Marc and Dylan. A taxi driver, Carmac, knows Kristie's name and speaks of the devil wanting a turn of his own, two thousand years after Christ, and of a virgin who is never told in advance.
