Plot summary
Nick Leeson works as a clerk at Barings Bank and wants to rise beyond that desk. The bank offers him a posting to Jakarta to sort out a problem no one else will take, and he accepts. In Jakarta he meets Lisa, and they marry. Barings then sends him to Singapore to set up its options trading operation on the SIMEX exchange. To keep costs down, the bank lets him run the trading floor and the back office together and staffs the desk with untrained hires. His first year of trading earns the bank large profits, even though he has broken trading rules and concealed losses in a hidden account. With more freedom and more money, and no one checking him, he begins to lose.
