Plot summary
Wallace Ritchie travels from Des Moines to London for a birthday visit with James, his brother, who has a business dinner that evening and signs him up for the Theatre of Life, an interactive company that casts its paying guests as characters in a crime drama. James gives him two Ambassador cigars to light before midnight. At the payphone the act uses, Wallace picks up a call meant for a hitman. Sir Roger Daggenhurst takes him for the killer he engaged, and Wallace plays along, sure it is part of the show. He meets Lori, who is holding letters about a plan to set off a bomb at a dinner for British and Russian dignitaries.

- Co-writer Robert Farrar built the premise from a chance remark at a dinner party. Someone described the interactive live theater shows that were the rage in England in the 1980s, where you telephoned for instructions to take part, and Farrar at once wondered what would happen if somebody got the wrong number.
