Plot summary
Bill Rohan, 18, leaves Pharaoh's Island when his call-up papers for national service arrive and reports to an army training camp. There he befriends Percy, another conscript. Most of their intake is posted to the Korean War, but the two are kept back as sergeants teaching typing. Sergeant-Major Bradley, a decorated World War II veteran, insists on the rulebook and makes their days difficult, while the orderly Redmond teaches them how to avoid work. Outside the camp, the two friends explore the town, where Bill is drawn to a beautiful, depressive girl from the upper class whom he calls Ophelia and Percy is smitten with Sophie, a student nurse.
