Plot summary
In the 21st century, the scientist D'Brannin works out the meaning of an alien transmission from the Valkrens and sets out to locate its origin. He gathers a team whose qualifications are questionable: Audrey, Keelor, Darryl, Lilly, the class ten telepath Jon Winderman, Jon's assistant Eliza, and Miranda. They charter a ship, the Nightflyer, and the captain, Royd Eris, welcomes them as a holograph; D'Brannin tells them the vessel runs itself, which lets the captain stay in his cabin. Jon becomes more and more worried by what he reads telepathically. Small cameras observe the crew everywhere, and Lilly cannot get into the computer.

- George R. R. Martin, who co-wrote the screenplay, believes Nightflyers saved his career, saying that everything he has written since exists in large part because of it, even though the film was not a hit in theaters.
- Robert Collector directed the 1987 adaptation Nightflyers using the pseudonym "T. C. Blake", because he had left the production before post-production was completed.
- George R. R. Martin, who co-wrote the screenplay, was unhappy about having to cut plot elements in order to accommodate the film's small budget.
