Plot summary
Ted Wallace is a jaded writer and former poet. He has not written a poem since 1987. He reviews small plays, takes baths, and drinks. After heckling a badly performed play, he loses that job. He then meets his goddaughter Jane, who pays him to look into a series of miracles at her family's manor. Jane had apparently recovered from leukaemia without explanation. The manor belongs to Ted's former friend Michael, Lord Logan. There Ted meets his sixteen-year-old godson David, who is fascinated by sex and nature. Ted's abrasive manner clashes with the perky optimism of the other residents.
