John Savage
Biography
John Savage is an American actor who built a reputation in the late 1970s playing troubled but sensitive characters. Born in Old Bethpage on Long Island, he trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and worked with Manhattan's Children's Theatre Group before his first major film role as Steven Pushkov in the war drama The Deer Hunter (1978). He followed it with leads in The Onion Field (1979) and Hair (1979), winning widespread critical acclaim. On stage he appeared on Broadway in David Mamet's American Buffalo. Later screen work ranged from The Thin Red Line to the recurring television roles of Donald Lydecker in Dark Angel and Henry Scudder in Carnivàle, plus episodes of the Law & Order franchise. His supporting turn in Fort Bliss (2014) drew positive notices, and he has received festival awards for performances in films including Money Fight and Betrayed (2018).
