Plot summary
Gilbert is walking along a rural road with a load of groceries when a passing photojournalist, Jimmy Wheeler, offers him a ride. Gilbert directs him off the main road, across a river and up to a remote house guarded by dogs. Inside are the children: Peter, the oldest, imposing and strictly religious; John; Martha, who is mute; Rita; James; and Baby, who can barely communicate. The children say their parents will return, but Peter tells Jimmy their father was an abusive bootlegger who fell drunk from the roof and their mother died giving birth to Baby. Peter wants Jimmy to take the father's place, and a woman, Carol Ann, already lives there as the children's Mama. Peter says they are free to leave, though earlier parents who tried to leave disappeared.
