Plot summary
In Oklahoma Territory in the late nineteenth century, Annie and Jenny are teenage girls who have grown up on Ned Buntline's tales of Western outlaws. Both leave home to find the men they have read about, and after a search they come upon the Doolin-Dalton gang. What remains of the outfit is a demoralized circle of men under Bill Doolin, nothing like the bandits of the stories. Jenny, the younger of the two, attaches herself to Doolin, who calls her Little Britches. Annie sets about shaming the men toward the gang she imagined them to be. Marshal Bill Tilghman is on the gang's trail, and the girls throw in with the men.

- During production, Burt Lancaster collapsed from a bile duct blockage. His daughter, who was on set, recalled that at 105 °F the ambulance taking him to hospital broke down, and he got out and pushed it.
