Plot summary
Three strands of one story move across the desert toward Red's Desert Oasis Diner, a roadside dive where the food is not great and the waitress is surly. Dwayne sells vacuum cleaners and kills people. Patty Mae keeps her own collection of sweepers. Johnny wants to die badly enough to pay the Exterminator, a hitman willing to end him by any means. Martin is out of work and traveling with his family, and two mobsters, Gene and Eddie, are crossing the same emptiness. Other travelers stop at Red's only for a meal on their way somewhere else.
