Richard Bright

Biography

Richard Bright was an American actor who began his career in live television in Manhattan and whose first screen part came in Robert Wise's Odds Against Tomorrow (1959). A Brooklyn native, he collaborated early on with his friend Sam Peckinpah, and he was best known as Al Neri, the enforcer and bodyguard to Michael Corleone, in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather. He returned as Neri in The Godfather: Part II (1974) and The Godfather: Part III (1990). In 1965 he starred in Michael McClure's two-person play The Beard. He had a supporting part in The Getaway (1972) and appeared in The Panic in Needle Park (1971). Later films included Marathon Man (1976) and Hair (1979), and he took the part of Chicken Joe, a hired killer, in Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America (1984). On television he took a recurring part in One Life to Live and later appeared on Law & Order. He died in 2006.
