Plot summary
Willie and Missie LaHaye part ways with the wagon train and press on to Tettsford Junction, where they mean to farm land of their own. The house waiting for them is old and run down, but it is the first home the two of them can call theirs. Willie works long days on the place, and Missie keeps waiting for a quiet moment to tell him she is expecting. In town he hires four hands, Henry, Cookie, Fyn and Scottie. Their neighbor Miriam Red Hawk McClain becomes Missie's friend. Riding over their land, the couple see Native Americans, and Willie fears for Missie's safety. They bury their money box among the trees, and Missie draws a map to mark the spot.
