Plot summary
Glory Marie Jackson and her husband Billy argue constantly, and Billy beats her. When she tells him she is taking the girls and leaving, he punches her and drives off. A policeman comes to the door that evening with news that Billy is dead. Glory Marie moves Bird and Phoebe to Tampa, takes a bookkeeping job at the motel run by Louis Ippolito, and the three settle into an old trailer because no rooms are free. Bird starts spending time with Zora Williams, a kind woman her mother has ordered her to avoid. Glory Marie turns to drink and beats her daughters.
