Plot summary

Doris Knight, a middle-aged woman, arrives in the rural Texas panhandle asking after a private detective who has gone missing. She finds the West family: Ray, a Vietnam veteran who runs a bar with his wife Kate and rules the house through violence; Jimmy, their nineteen-year-old son, who sleeps apart in a warehouse on the property; and two younger boys, Mark and Mikey. A war wound has left Ray impotent, and he insists on a sexual relationship between Kate and Jimmy. Jimmy's girlfriend, Traci Connor, watches him turn down a college scholarship because he will not leave his brothers alone with Ray.
