Plot summary
In 1989, six-year-old Martin Bristol has a rare neural disorder that leaves him unable to feel pain or temperature. Graham Sutter carries the boy off to the shuttered slaughterhouse outside Minersville, Pennsylvania, once run by Graham's family, and keeps him captive, making him watch while he kills the women he brings there. Five years on, seventeen-year-old Allison Miller loses her parents and goes to live with her uncle Jonathan, his wife Karen and their daughter Wendy in a house near the plant. She runs alone along the road, meets William, a local mechanic, and takes an interest in him. Jonathan tells her to keep away from the factory and from William. She runs past the plant anyway and glimpses Martin through a window.
