Plot summary
Nearing sixty, Michael Corleone is weighed down by guilt over his rise in organized crime. At a reception in his honor at St. Patrick's Old Cathedral, his son Anthony tells him he will quit law school for a career as an opera singer. Michael and Kay are divorced, and the children, Anthony and Mary, live with their mother. Michael's nephew Vincent Mancini, the illegitimate son of Sonny, arrives and gets into a dispute with Joey Zasa. Michael brings Vincent into the family business. To make the Corleones legitimate, Michael offers Archbishop Gilday of the Vatican Bank $600 million for the Vatican's shares in Internazionale Immobiliare. Don Altobello says his partners want in on the Immobiliare deal, and when Zasa gets nothing, he declares Michael an enemy.

- Rebecca Schaeffer was selected to audition for the role on the day she was scheduled to meet Coppola, but was murdered by an obsessed fan earlier that day, having just filmed the television miniseries Voyage of Terror: The Achille Lauro Affair in Italy. Winona Ryder took the part and dropped out a few weeks into production.
- Robert Duvall refused to take part unless he was paid a salary comparable to the $6 million Pacino earned on the previous film. When he dropped out, Coppola rewrote the screenplay so Tom Hagen had died before the story begins, replacing him with B. J. Harrison, played by George Hamilton.
- Production was delayed for three weeks by the physical collapse of Ryder while a replacement was found, a search complicated by Coppola being forced to declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy over his debts.
- Frank Sinatra, who had not been happy with Puzo's depiction of Johnny Fontane in the original novel, agreed to play Don Altobello, but the shooting schedule was too long for him to commit and the character was eventually played by Eli Wallach.
- As an infant, Sofia Coppola had already played Michael Corleone's nephew Michael Rizzi in The Godfather, during the climactic baptism and murder montage, and she appears again in Part II as a small immigrant child arriving at Ellis Island.

The Swiss banker Frederick Keinszig, played by Helmut Berger, who is murdered and left hanging under a bridge, mirrors the fate and appearance of Roberto Calvi, head of the Banco Ambrosiano, found hanging under Blackfriars Bridge in London in 1982; in 2002 courts in London ruled it a murder.SPOILER
Don Licio Lucchesi, played by Enzo Robutti, is widely seen as partly inspired by seven-time Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti, down to the thick-rimmed glasses, and the line Calò speaks before stabbing him, "Power wears out those who don't have it", is a quote attributed to Andreotti.
