Plot summary
Beauty is the youngest of a wealthy merchant's children, and she looks after the whole family. A storm at sea destroys her father's wealth, and the family moves to the countryside, where Beauty takes charge again. Word arrives that a ship has reached port, and he promises his children gifts; Beauty asks only for a rose. He comes home with nothing, and on his way a castle's unseen host feeds him and gives him shelter. He plucks a rose in the garden, and the Beast demands that Beauty come live with him as punishment.
