Plot summary
Cardinal Wolsey arranged the king's new marriage of state. King Henry VIII has his previous wife beheaded and at once takes a new bride, Marie of Normandy, a cousin whom King Francis I of France favors. On the wedding night Marie chews a clove of garlic, which she calls a Normandy custom, and the king, put off by the smell, leaves without consummating the marriage. She will not give up the habit, and Henry wants the union ended, though he fears offending Francis, whose goodwill the match protects. Marie does not rebuff the amorous attentions of Sir Roger de Lodgerley, an attaché of the king.
