Plot summary
In 1950 London, George Brain leads a gang that robs a bank of fifty thousand pounds and escapes in a hearse, the men dressed as undertakers, before police corner them in the countryside. George hides the briefcase of money inside a hollow tree, and all three are jailed for fifteen years in Wormwood Scrubs. Released in 1965, they find a new town and housing estate around the tree, which now stands on police station grounds near the boundary wall. George and his men rent two first-floor rooms in a nearby house from a widow and her daughter under false names, one overlooking the tree, and learn at dinner that a policeman has the third room. To look respectable, George agrees to marry Myrtle Robbins, his girlfriend of many years.
