Plot summary
Dr Gaston Grimsdyke loses his job as medical officer at a men's prison after misbehavior with the Governor's daughter. His old tutor, Sir Lancelot Spratt, takes him on at St Swithin's Hospital, intending to turn him into a surgeon, though Grimsdyke's attention keeps drifting to the nurses. A senior medical post is about to fall vacant, and Grimsdyke schemes to be considered for it, even though his cousin Miles has been unofficially offered the job. Spratt, meanwhile, has clashed with the newly appointed matron, Matron Sweet, and orders Grimsdyke to soften her up. Grimsdyke himself is in love with the hospital's young physiotherapist, who thinks him too old for her.
