Kenneth Connor
Biography
Kenneth Connor was a British actor who worked in theater, film, and broadcasting and became known for the Carry On comedies. Born in London, he was on stage as a toddler and had his own act by age eleven. He trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and made his professional debut in 1936 in The Boy David. After wartime concert-party touring, he joined the Bristol Old Vic, then the London Old Vic, and specialized in comedy. He took over from Peter Sellers on the radio show Ray's a Laugh and had a small part in The Ladykillers (1955). Cast in Carry On Sergeant (1958), he appeared in seventeen Carry On films, playing romantic leads and later less sympathetic characters. His other films included Carry On Nurse (1959), What a Carve Up! (1961), and Carry On Cruising (1962). On television he appeared in Rentaghost and 'Allo 'Allo!, and he was appointed an MBE in 1991.

Connor studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama and won a Gold Medal there. His professional debut came in December 1936, in J. M. Barrie's The Boy David at His Majesty's Theatre in London.

Connor had a good tenor voice, and he put it to good effect at times, as in the 1962 movie Carry On Cruising.

In 1963 Connor played Hysterium in the original London West End staging of Stephen Sondheim's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, appearing with Frankie Howerd, and he directed the production when it toured.
