Plot summary
Francis Bigger tours the country with his assistant Chloe Gibson, telling audiences that the mind can overcome the body. An accident during one of his lectures puts him in the local hospital, and the ward he lands in is full of patients he would rather avoid. Charlie Roper stays in bed by faking symptoms, Ken Biddle is recovering from an operation and slips away to the ladies' ward to see Mavis Winkle, and Mr. Barron suffers sympathy pains while his wife waits for their first child. Bigger asks for a private room. He meets Dr. Jim Kilmore, a clumsy young doctor who is popular with the patients, and Kilmore's superior, Dr. Kenneth Tinkle, who is detested on the ward along with the Matron, Lavinia. A novice nurse, Sandra May, arrives at the hospital.
