Plot summary
Joanna Jones passes her driving test after a hundred and six lessons and wins a post as a District Nurse in a country village. She and her mother settle into a cottage there, and she takes up her rounds. The patients are used to Nurse Merrick, who has recently retired, and they prefer an older nurse, so Joanna despairs of winning their confidence. Nurse Merrick calls on her and remembers that her own start in the village, years before, had been just as hard. Joanna meets Henry Edwards, a rich and very short-tempered farmer, and works alongside Dr Harold Golfrey, the doctor her mother hopes she will fall in love with. Edwards shows more interest in her.
