Plot summary
A flu outbreak has thinned the ranks at a suburban police station, and Sergeant Wilkins, under pressure to keep up staffing levels, is glad to hear that three recruits who have just finished training school are on their way. Heading in, PC Stanley Benson, PC Tom Potter and PC Charles Constable inadvertently help some bank robbers into a getaway car, and are embarrassed once they learn the truth. Benson considers himself an intellectual and dabbles in psychology, Potter is a former playboy, and Constable is deeply superstitious. WPC Gloria Passworthy joins the station, and Constable falls for her, while Special Constable Timothy Gorse rounds out the newcomers. Out on their rounds the newcomers try hard but get little right, and proving themselves matters, since a poor showing could cost them their jobs and send Wilkins elsewhere.

- Ray was contracted to ABC, which distributed the Carry On films to cinemas. Unhappy at seeing one of their contracted actors in a rival production, they threatened to stop distribution, so Peter Rogers reluctantly dropped him and replaced him with Sid James, beginning James's 19-film run with the team.
- This was the first Carry On film to include some nudity, with Kenneth Connor, Charles Hawtrey, Kenneth Williams and Leslie Phillips baring their behinds during a shower scene.
- Leslie Phillips turns up here as one of the series' early regulars, but he did not appear in a Carry On film again for another 32 years.
