Plot summary
William Wakefield has spent twenty years at Maudlin Street Secondary Modern School and runs it as acting headmaster. He sees an advertisement for the headmaster's job at a brand-new school near his birthplace and applies. The child psychiatrist Alistair Grigg and Miss Wheeler, from the Ministry of Education, are due to inspect the school, so Wakefield asks his staff to keep the routine running smoothly. Among the teachers are Gregory Adams, who takes science, Michael Bean, who takes music, Edwin Milton, who takes English, and Sarah Allcock, the gym mistress. Robin Stevens, a senior pupil, learns that Wakefield intends to go at the end of term and passes the news around the school. Fond of him, they plan to spoil every effort that might win him praise. Grigg is at the school to research juvenile behavior for a book.
