Hattie Jacques
Biography
Hattie Jacques was an English actress who worked in comedy across stage, radio and screen and became one of the Carry On series' regular players. Born in Sandgate, Kent, she made her professional debut in 1944 at London's Players' Theatre in the revue Late Joys. She gained national prominence on BBC radio in It's That Man Again, Educating Archie and Hancock's Half Hour. Her film debut came in Green for Danger (1946). Between 1958 and 1974 she made 14 Carry On films, often as strict, no-nonsense characters, among them the formidable hospital matron in Carry On Nurse (1959), Carry On Doctor (1967) and Carry On Again Doctor (1969). Other films included Carry On Sergeant (1958), Carry On Cabby (1963), Carry On Camping (1969) and The Magic Christian (1969). She also formed a long professional partnership with Eric Sykes on television, co-starring in Sykes and a... and Sykes. She died in 1980.

About the name
In 1946, while appearing at the Players', Jacques took the nickname Hattie after she performed in Coal Black Mammies for Dixie, a minstrel show. A backstage staff member compared her blacked up look to the American actress Hattie McDaniel, and she kept the name for life.
First role
Jacques made her professional theatrical debut in 1944 at the Players' Theatre in London in the revue Late Joys, after being auditioned by Leonard Sachs, and added a c to her birth name as Josephine Jacques.
Getting ready for a role
In the 1950 film Chance of a Lifetime, Jacques played Alice, a welder. Offered a fee for 17 days of filming, she said she had welded Bailey and Pontoon Bridges and knew how hard the job was, so the offer was raised.
