Biography

Jenny Slate is an American comedian, writer and actress who started out in New York City's comedy scene, performing one-woman shows at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and forming the duo Gabe & Jenny with Gabe Liedman. Her animated short Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, which she co-created and voiced, grew into a series and a children's book. She became a Saturday Night Live cast member in 2009 and later worked on the sitcoms Bob's Burgers, Parks and Recreation, House of Lies and Kroll Show. Her lead turn in Obvious Child (2014) earned her comedy acting honors from the Critics' Choice Awards. She lent her voice to The Lorax (2012), Zootopia (2016), The Secret Life of Pets (2016), The Lego Batman Movie (2017) and Despicable Me 3 (2017), took a dramatic role in Gifted (2017), and appeared in Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), whose cast won a Screen Actors Guild Award.

  1. First role

    Slate was added to the Saturday Night Live cast for the 2009-10 season. During her debut sketch in her first episode, she accidentally said "f***ing", which aired live but was cut from reruns.

  2. Big break

    Slate's breakout role was the lead in Gillian Robespierre's Obvious Child (2014), a performance that won her the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actress in a Comedy.

  3. Behind the camera

    Slate voiced and co-wrote the animated short Marcel the Shell with Shoes On in August 2010. A follow-up, Marcel the Shell with Shoes on, Two, came next, and on November 1, 2011, a children's book she wrote with a "Marcel" theme was released.

    Slate studied literature at Columbia University, where she helped start the improv group Fruit Paunch and appeared in the Varsity Show. At Columbia she also met Gabe Liedman, later her comedy partner.

    Slate and Gabe Liedman were the comedy duo Gabe & Jenny. With Max Silvestri, they did stand-up shows called "Big Terrific", which Time Out New York picked as 2008's best new variety show.
