Plot summary
On June 21, 2028, a riot over the city's water privatization tears through Los Angeles. Sherman leads a bank robbery that leaves half his crew dead; his brother Lev and an accomplice are badly wounded. They flee to Hotel Artemis, an underground hospital for criminals run by Jean Thomas. Confined by agoraphobia and grief for her son Beau, Thomas enforces strict rules: no weapons, no non-members, no killing other guests. Her orderly Everest throws out the accomplice, whose membership chip fails. Sherman and Lev are admitted as Waikiki and Honolulu. Among the guests are Acapulco, an arms dealer, and Nice, an assassin and old acquaintance. A wounded police officer named Morgan arrives begging for help and calls Thomas by name.
