Plot summary
Judy Hopps, a rabbit from rural Bunnyburrow, dreams of joining the police in the mammal city of Zootopia and becomes its first rabbit officer. Chief Bogo assigns her parking duty on her first day, and a red fox con artist named Nick Wilde hustles her. She then arrests Duke Weaselton for robbing a florist. When Mrs. Otterton asks the department to find her missing husband Emmitt, one of several predators who have disappeared, Judy volunteers for the case. Bogo gives her 48 hours to solve it or turn in her badge. Nick was among the last to see Emmitt, so she blackmails him into helping, and their clues lead to a naturist club and a sloth-run DMV.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Zootopia (2016)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Zootopia began as an international spy film starring a James Bond-style arctic hare named Jack Savage, and it was this version that brought screenwriter Jared Bush aboard, drawn to the project in part because his own father and grandfather had worked for the CIA.
- Zootopia's lead characters Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde were each given roughly 2.5 million individual hairs by animators, while a background giraffe character carried nine million strands of fur, more even than the 400,000 hairs on Elsa's head in Frozen.
- Disney had to rename the film Zootropolis across the UK and other territories because it could not trademark "Zootopia" there, partly because a Danish zoo, Givskud Zoo, had already registered that exact name back in 2010.
- In March 2017 Esplanade Productions, owned by Total Recall co-screenwriter Gary L. Goldman, sued Disney for copyright infringement, claiming Goldman had pitched the studio a live-action film called Looney, about a socially awkward animator who creates a self-inspired TV cartoon named Zootopia.
- For a while the filmmakers were very committed to that version of the story, but in November 2014 they realized the plot would be more engaging if they reversed the roles, focusing on Hopps instead of Wilde.
- Animators spent eight months studying animals' walk cycles and fur color at Disney's Animal Kingdom, in Kenya and at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and eight hundred thousand forms of mammals were created for and featured in the film.
