Plot summary
Bruce Wayne keeps to his island and his cave, patrolling Gotham City as Batman while the Joker and his crew threaten it. Batman stops them and tells the Joker that he is not his greatest enemy and that nobody matters to him, and the Joker begins plotting revenge. At a gala for the retiring Commissioner Jim Gordon, his daughter Barbara, the new commissioner, argues that the police should defend the city without Batman, and Bruce agrees to adopt an orphan, Dick Grayson. The Joker and his villains then surrender themselves to the police. Alfred, the butler, lets Dick into the Batcave, and Bruce takes the boy on as Robin.

- The Lego Batman Movie was the first film in The Lego Movie franchise not to be composed by Mark Mothersbaugh; Lorne Balfe wrote the score instead.
- Director Chris McKay said the film's Gotham City was inspired by Chicago, partly because Christopher Nolan had filmed The Dark Knight Trilogy there.
- Billy Dee Williams voiced Two-Face, a nod to his role as Harvey Dent in 1989's Batman; it was his second Lego film after voicing Lando Calrissian in The Lego Movie.
- The film was originally going to include more villains, among them Kill Bill's Bride, Darth Vader, Gangs of New York's William Poole and Misery's Annie Wilkes, but those ideas never came to fruition.
- Producer Dan Lin conceived The Lego Batman Movie as a family-friendly version of Deadpool, while he described The Lego Movie as The Matrix for children.
- Chris McKay said the two-and-a-half years allocated to the film made it hard to fit in everything he wanted, calling the production a very mixed blessing.
- Chevrolet unveiled a life-sized Lego Batmobile at the 2017 North American International Auto Show, built from around 350,000 Lego pieces.
- A planned sequel, tentatively titled Lego Superfriends, was canceled after Universal Pictures acquired the Lego film rights in 2020, since Warner Bros. owned the DC Comics rights.
