Plot summary
Frances, a painter in New York, watches art evaluators assess her work harshly, breaks up with her boyfriend and goes back to her parents' apartment. At dinner her sister Gabby announces she is getting married, and their father says he and their mother are separating. A counselor then places Frances with the artist Nils in a remote part of northern Norway to paint a barn, after the Tokyo residency she wanted goes to another artist. She lives in a trailer by the water, kept awake by the sun that never sets, and Nils sets her to painting the barn's interior while he paints the outside. She meets Haldor, an American who has taken up the Viking life, and Yasha, a New Yorker whose father is to be buried the Viking way.
