Biography

Dana Carvey is an American stand-up comedian, actor, and podcaster. Born in Missoula, Montana, he grew up in California and won the San Francisco Open Stand-Up Comedy Competition in 1977. After a small part in This Is Spinal Tap, his breakthrough came in 1986 with Tough Guys. That year he joined Saturday Night Live, where he spent seven seasons. He became known for characters like the Church Lady and Garth Algar. His work on the show brought him five Primetime Emmy nominations and one win. He appeared in Moving (1988), Opportunity Knocks (1990), Trapped in Paradise (1994), and The Master of Disguise (2002). He played Garth in Wayne's World (1992) and Wayne's World 2 (1993). He voiced Pops in The Secret Life of Pets (2016) and The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019). He hosted the podcasts Fantastic! with Dana Carvey and Fly on the Wall, and in 2024 he returned to SNL to play Joe Biden and Elon Musk.

  1. A role that slipped away

    Carvey was a finalist to host the Nickelodeon game show Double Dare, but he withdrew after being cast on Saturday Night Live, and the job went to Marc Summers.

  2. Big break

    Carvey got his big break in 1986, playing opposite Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster in Tough Guys. A longtime Douglas fan, he included a fond impression of his mentor.

  3. A first

    The next year, Carvey filmed Critic's Choice, his first HBO stand-up special. In the show he did many of his SNL impersonations and made fun of the premium channel's name, saying it as "hobo".
