Frank has raised his niece Mary in St. Petersburg, Florida, teaching her at home himself. On her first day of first grade she is bored by the classwork and answers every question her teacher, Bonnie, puts to her. Roberta, Frank's landlady and Mary's closest friend, worries that the girl's gift will be noticed. Frank wants Mary to have an ordinary childhood and refuses the principal's offer of a scholarship to a school for gifted children.
