Plot summary
Eddie Brock is an investigative journalist in San Francisco. Reading a classified document that belongs to Anne Weying, the attorney he is engaged to, he learns of human trials conducted by the Life Foundation. He accuses Carlton Drake, the foundation's chief executive, of running them. Both Eddie and Anne lose their jobs, and Anne breaks off the engagement. Half a year later, Drake's scientist Dora Skirth, troubled by the trials, wants him exposed and gets Eddie into the foundation's facility to gather evidence. There Eddie finds Maria, a woman he knows, held as a test subject. He tries to free her, and the symbiote inside her passes into his body instead.

- Tom Hardy improvised on set: when he noticed a lobster tank on a restaurant set and decided his character would get into it, the production design team worked overnight to reinforce the tank and fill it with fake lobsters so Hardy could get in it the next day.
- According to several reports, Tom Holland spent several days during production filming a cameo as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, but Marvel Studios asked Sony to exclude the scene from the final film.
- Riz Ahmed was in talks to join in August 2017, with Matt Smith, Pedro Pascal and Matthias Schoenaerts all considered for the same role, while Tatiana Maslany and Lashana Lynch also auditioned.
- Hardy recorded his lines as the symbiote at the start of each filming day, and they were played back to him through an earpiece on set during scenes where Eddie and the symbiote talk to each other, a process he had used playing twins in Legend (2015).
- Because Venom's origin is not tied to Spider-Man in the film, the filmmakers did not give him Spider-Man's chest symbol; instead he has a subtle 'V' formed from the symbiote's white veins, which also helped the all-black character read in night scenes.
- To design the shapeless symbiotes, the visual effects team studied slime molds, jellyfish and time-lapse photography of amoeba, wanting creatures that Franklin described as "predatory and threatening".
- Rapper Eminem contributed a new song to the film: a bonus track titled "Venom" on his album Kamikaze that references the movie, released as a digital single on September 21.
- Fans began using the name "SymBrock" for Eddie and Venom's relationship, and Tumblr's Fandometrics team, tracking posts, likes and reblogs across 440 million blogs, reported it as the most used ship name in the week ending October 15.
