Plot summary
In the 1990s Philippines, Jo Yuson tells her classmates about Nakali, a forgotten island, and the dreaded Manananggal, and after one of them mocks her she is sent to the principal's office. There she meets Raissa Molina, who had defended her, and the two become best friends. Jo's grandmother, Lola Fatima, describes her own journeys to Nakali, and the girls make matching charm bracelets. Lola Fatima dies, and Jo is heartbroken. After graduation, Raissa says she will attend Caltech, and at her farewell party Jo overhears Raissa's mother disapproving of their friendship. The girls slip away to the beach, where Jo finds a sand dollar that opens a portal to Nakali. They enter, and when they wake they remember nothing of the night, with the island's price for going home being the memories of their friendship.
