Plot summary
Susannah Cahalan, twenty-four, writes for the New York Post and lives with her boyfriend, Stephen Grywalski. A cough and fatigue look like the flu, then come trance states in which she hears people say words they never spoke, along with hypersensitivity to loud noises. Her behavior turns erratic, and a seizure sends her to a doctor who blames partying, overwork and too little rest. Her mother, Rhona Nack, takes her in; after another seizure she has an MRI and wonders whether she is bipolar. Rhona struggles to care for her, and an outburst at dinner with her father, Tom Cahalan, and his fiancée leads her parents to demand she be hospitalized. There a doctor tells them she may have schizophrenia.
