Plot summary
The people of Frankenstein's village believe a curse hangs over them and blame the Monster for their troubles, so the Mayor permits the destruction of Frankenstein's castle. The blasts free the Monster from the sulfur tomb that had weakened yet preserved him, and a lightning strike renews his power. Ygor resolves to find Ludwig, Henry Frankenstein's second son, a doctor with a thriving practice in Visaria, where Dr. Kettering works beside him and Dr. Theodore Bohmer, once Ludwig's teacher, now serves as his envious assistant. There the Monster befriends Cloestine Hussman, a young girl, and lifts her onto a roof to fetch her ball. The prosecutor Erik Ernst asks Ludwig to examine the captured giant. Ygor reaches Ludwig first, asking him to mend the Monster, and when Ludwig refuses, threatens to reveal his ancestry.

- Boris Karloff was planned to reprise his role as Frankenstein's Monster in the fourth Universal film, but had scheduling conflicts with Arsenic and Old Lace, so Lon Chaney Jr. was chosen to play the monster instead.
- Lon Chaney Jr. suffered a severe allergic reaction to the monster makeup applied by Jack Pierce and missed several days of shooting on The Ghost of Frankenstein.
- Universal submitted the script to the Production Code Association under the title There's Always Tomorrow; censors warned against excessive violence and said the operating room and insanity ward scenes would be deleted in England.
- The Ghost of Frankenstein, the fourth film in Universal's Frankenstein series, was banned in Denmark when Universal tried to release it there in 1948.
- Early versions of the script by Eric Taylor included material not used in the film, such as bringing back Basil Rathbone's character from Son of Frankenstein.
