Plot summary
Lady Margaret Carstairs owns the Star of Rhodesia, a diamond that thieves once tried to take while she wore it at a royal function. Her son Roland hires Sherlock Holmes to see the jewel safely to Scotland on an evening train, and Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard makes the trip for the same reason. Watson's army friend Major Duncan-Bleek rushes aboard at the last moment, and Vivian Vedder travels with a coffin holding her mother's body. When Roland is found dead in his compartment and the diamond's box is empty, Holmes and Lestrade question the passengers in the car, among them a professor of mathematics who refuses to cooperate. Watson finds Lestrade's pace slow and tries questioning the passengers himself.
