Plot summary
Naila is still young when the throne of Khemis, an ancient Egyptian kingdom, passes to her after her father dies in a slave revolt. She keeps up her habit of going among her people in disguise, and she leaves the palace that way to look for Herua, the rebel leader. Palace treachery puts her in danger, and in the desert she falls in with a pickpocket and his sidekick and with an escaped slave, who take up her cause.
