Plot summary
The Borgia Pearl, a gem with a long history of bringing misfortune to its owners, is brought to London with Sherlock Holmes's help. At the Royal Regent Museum, Giles Conover seizes it, but when he is searched the pearl is not on him and he goes free. Holmes hears of an elderly colonel found dead with his back broken amid shattered china. The method points to the Hoxton Creeper, a killer known to work as Conover's right-hand man. A second victim, an old lady, is found the same way. Conover twice tries to kill Holmes. Conover also has an accomplice, Naomi Drake.
