Plot summary

Mr. Chalmers, an insurance agent, brings Sherlock Holmes a strange account. Seven men who call themselves the Good Comrades share Drearcliffe House, a remote castle near the Scottish village of Inverneill. Chalmers holds life insurance policies worth £100,000 on the seven. One of them received an envelope containing seven orange pips and was murdered that night, his body mutilated. A second envelope arrived with six pips, and the man who received it died soon afterwards, his body found below the cliffs. Chalmers believes one of the men is killing the others to collect the money and asks Holmes to look into it. Holmes and Dr. Watson go to the castle, where Inspector Lestrade is also investigating, and learn that another death has already occurred.
