Plot summary
John Davidson, serving a sentence in Dartmoor prison, crafts music boxes whose melody notes carry a hidden message about where stolen Bank of England printing plates rest. The three boxes go to separate buyers at auction, each with its own version of an Australian tune called The Swagman. Julian Emery, a friend of Dr. Watson who collects music boxes, tells Holmes and Watson of a break-in at his house in which only a plain, cheap box was moved, while his valuable pieces were left alone. Holmes asks to see the collection. A visitor, Hilda Courtney, offers to buy the box Emery bought at auction, and he refuses. Emery is murdered, and Holmes sets out to trace the other buyers.
