Plot summary
In 1917, Dubois runs the French spy bureau and offers a captured agent his life in exchange for the name of the person he is shielding; the prisoner chooses the firing squad instead. Into Paris comes Lieutenant Alexis Rosanoff, who has flown dispatches out of Russia, and he talks General Serge Shubin into taking him to see the dancer Mata Hari, with whom he is smitten on sight. She allows him one night and then tells him plainly there will not be another. Carlotta sends her to Andriani, the spymaster she serves, who wants the contents of the Russian dispatches. Dubois shares his suspicions about her with Shubin; the general laughs them off, though he himself has given her secret information.

- Mata Hari was censored on its reissue once the Hays Code was strictly enforced in mid-1934; Mata's erotic dance to the statue of Shiva was drastically shortened, leaving only a glimpse of her almost nude at the statue's feet, played in long shots by a dance double.
- According to reports never officially confirmed but apparently uncontradicted for over a decade, an uncut print of the film with French and Dutch subtitles survives at the Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique in Brussels, where it was shown publicly in 2005, with a stated running time of 92 minutes against 89 for the censored 2005 DVD.
