Plot summary
Baron Wolf von Frankenstein moves his wife Elsa and their son Peter into the family castle to claim his inheritance and restore his father Henry's name. The villagers receive them with hostility, blaming the family for the destruction caused by Henry's Monster years earlier. Wolf finds a friend in Inspector Krogh, who lost an arm to the creature when he was a child. Inside the castle, Wolf encounters Ygor, a blacksmith with a deformed neck who survived a hanging for grave-robbing. Ygor takes Wolf to the crypt, where the Monster lies in a coma. Convinced he can prove his father was right and return honor to the Frankenstein name, Wolf decides to revive the creature.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Son of Frankenstein (1939)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- On October 24, Universal announced in The Hollywood Reporter plans to hire Karloff, Lugosi and Peter Lorre, but Lorre fell through because the company could not borrow him from 20th Century Fox; the press release said he had stopped working in horror films to become Mr. Moto.
- Lugosi told Ed Sullivan shortly before release that a lack of work had forced him to stretch eight weeks of pay over one hundred and four weeks. He was then called to appear at the Regina Theatre for screenings of Dracula, Frankenstein and Son of Kong, and was cast soon after.
- Son of Frankenstein was Karloff's final appearance as the monster in the series. In 1948 he said that after it he decided the character no longer had any potentialities, because the makeup did all the work.
