Plot summary
Missouri in 1864 is far from the war's front lines, split by partisan and guerrilla fighting. Jean Shelby belongs to a family of Southern sympathizers and shares its cause; from Union soldiers she gathers information that she passes to her brother Bob for the Confederacy. At Union headquarters, Major Barker pays a renegade Cherokee named Whitecloud for word of where Bob is hiding. Whitecloud, expelled by his own people after he tried to abduct Jean's mother, still pursues the Shelbys. Soldiers bring Jean before Barker. She pulls a gun on her guard, makes Barker and Captain Fred Raymond drop their weapons, and flees through a window on Raymond's horse, riding to her parents' house to warn them and to move her wounded brother out of reach.
